New to Maprun and needed for orienteering events I want to do. Tried- and failed last Sunday.
And I tried again on a permanent event today with zero success. So, 2 related questions: 1. How do you use Maprun G if the event is started with a PIN code? I press 'start' on Garmin and it does not start the event, neither does simply leaving the start. PIN is required for the event in Maprun 7.1.6 (and does start on entry of PIN- and all seems good as long as Maprun is operating in the foreground...) 2. How do you get an IPhone to run Maprun is background including playing sound? I have zero problems with any other software- e.g. Google maps runs in background. With Maprun I seem to need to set it to access location services 'all the time' (not just 'when using app') but I still can't get a beep out of it (works fine in foreground so unaware of problem until I actually started the event). Maprun then simply stopped working during the event (location services set to 'when using app' - my default setting for any app for hopefully obvious reasons)- possibly because it didn't get a GPS fix for a while??? Thanks |
I might have some ideas to help. Starting with 2, this sounds more like a “background app refresh” setting issue. Location services can be “when using” but the “Background App Refresh” needs to be set on. From Settings on the phone, scroll way down to MapRun and check.
Regarding 1, your description sounds a bit strange as, if you have MapRunG set up properly you do not have a “go to start” in the app but “send event to my Garmin watch”. For events with a PIN the default is that it is not needed for MapRunG as you have have no course/map on the watch. If everything is properly set up you select the event in the app, open “options and setting’ and select “GPS watch mode’. Back on the main screen the Start has now changed to “Send event to watch”. Not really applicable here but you can then go back to the app and deselect watch mode and now use both the phone and watch. A detailed set of instruction are available https://maprunners.weebly.com/uploads/6/8/6/6/6866500/maprung_user_info_v17.pdf Although the website section is generally enough https://maprunners.weebly.com/maprung.html |
Hi Michael
Maprun G issue turns out to be stupidity on my part On no sounds with Maprun in background- I have an Iwatch and the best suggestion I have had is to turn it off- because default setting is to mirror alerts and play noises if the iPhone is asleep- so in theory the watch should make the Maprun noise when Maprun is in background on the phone |
Glad you sorted out the MapRunG. Regarding the other issue, I was focused on your statement “ Maprun then simply stopped working during the event (location services set to 'when using app' ” which sounded like a issue not being set to refresh in the background (not related to the location services setting). Assuming this is correct and MapRun is running properly in the background (less the sound aspect), I need to step back as I do not have an Apple Watch.
Side note - if the app is not refreshing in the background properly, this is normally easy to see. At a control bring the map up and you may see a red GPS status briefly at the bottom (as MapRun reconnects) and then a punch. At the end your route/track will be mostly a bunch of straight lines between each time you open the app. |
Michael-
I agree- it happened during the longest period between controls ( at every control I took my phone out and woke Maprun- to check I was at the control). I’ll report back asap on what happens with watch turned off |
I just saw in another thread that you have confirmed that “background refresh” is on. This looks so much like an issue with this not being on and causing a problem with punching and the sound is a secondary result. I don’t see how being paired to an Apple Watch would cause issues with MapRun running in the background but, as I don’t have an Apple Watch I have nothing more!!

Michael- background refresh was on and at controls when I took my phone out of my pocket it then showed correct information. The only thing that didn’t work in background was sound ( did work in foreground).
However 1/2 way round it simply stopped with no record of even a partial course. Garmin via strava got me a result. I’m prepared to believe in weirdness and will try with iwatch turned off. |
I think you need to send the event details to support. Peter may be able to grab the log file and figure out why the event stopped working.

For any readers of this thread... Just to report back on direct communication with support@maprun.net on this.
Some further testing of MapRun6 / MapRun version 7 on iPhone, where there is a paired Apple Watch indicates: - if you have the setting: Notifications > MapRun > Mirror iPhone Alerts turned ON (this is the default setting) (This is in the Watch App on your iPhone): - when MapRun punches a control it generates a "local notification" which iOS then delivers. - if the MapRun app is in focus on the screen, the vibration, sound and text is delivered to the iPhone - but if the iPhone screen has blanked ("asleep"), then iOS delivers the notification to the Apple Watch - However, in testing this behaviour seems to be inconsistent ... and the root cause is unknown at this stage... Apple do warn against any one App sending too many notifications to an Apple Watch(?) - WORK AROUND: We suggest you turn OFF the setting mentioned above. This will revert MapRun to "standard" operations (ignoring the Apple Watch) - As far as we know MapRun6 and MapRun v7 are reliable and stable and we don't have other reports of silent crashes during an event. But we can't guarantee this would never happen. We do use Crashlytics, a system that is meant to catch exceptions and report them. - Mirroring notifications from an iPhone (or Android) to a Garmin Watch seems to work reliably. But we will repeat our testing over coming days. - Back on Apple Watches, like we have MapRunG for Garmin, we have MapRunA for Apple watches. This is in beta testing, and will be the recommended solution for those with Apple Watches. Peter |
