I thought Orienteering by forming words based on Scrabble would be fun. I had no idea what I was getting into and with no programming or spreadsheet skills I knew I could not do this without help. I really wanted to see this happen. I posted on here a couple of weeks ago asking if there was a way to do this. Peter quickly answered YES and Michael took it from there. The 2 main problems with this as it would have to be done with Score-O/Scatter format and the format does not really allow multiple punches with the same QR/NFC/GPS or even e-punches. The other problem was that results come out in numbers. So how can that all be translated into having your results come out in words complete with time and spelling penalties? Michael Raz used Google Sheets to do the translation and kept at this for 2 weeks with me doing various tests and eventually he came up with a version that works! It basically works the same as a Score-O but instead of control numbers at the location of the control, you would have letters (each letter contains a value based on Scrabble). At the control location would be the letter to confirm you are at the right control. When downloading or finishing, the Google Spreadsheet does the conversions and done instantly. Total net points wins the race. (After spelling and time limit penalties subtracted) Michael can go into more details on how it works. Michael Raz deserves all the credit for this. To me, it opens up a bunch of new possibilities and I can't wait to try this out with some willing folks!

I have discovered a small bug in the embedded links. There is an easy workaround but it might catch others unexpectedly so I thought it worth mentioning. If you put an embedded link to a web page and that link has a space in the name, e.g. 'http://mydomain/Event Name' then when you click the link on an iPhone it crashes the MapRun app. It doesn't happen on Android devices. The workaround is to use http://mydomain/Event%20Name. I tested with a very minimal 'Hello World' webpage to eliminate other causes.

I thought maybe it was because the URL was being truncated at the space and so an unknown URL would also crash but strangely this produces the expected 404 error, a bit odd.

Opening the URL using Safari works fine. I'm not sure if MapRun uses an interface to the default browser or a (flutter?) web page display library but it looks like there is a minor bug in there somewhere.

My wife, I and several other competitors could not get MapRun (7) to work last night at an event held by Orienteering Waikato. We both went through the normal selection of event process then 'Go to Start' inserted the PIN number, I put the mob in my pouch and proceeded to participate. When I opened the MapRun following the finish there is nothing recorded. We won't use MapRun (7) again until we get MapRun's assurance that this will not happen again. We have lost some confidence in this app.

I have just uninstalled maprun6 and installed maprun7. I have turned on watch mode and entered ID and logged into Garmin accounts and accepted permissions. However, when I download a course to the phone and click on "send event to Garmin watch" the event doesn't appear on the watch, but a note appears on the phone reading "Enter name details before going to the start".
Any ideas what I need to do to resolve? Previously the event would transfer straight across to the watch and I could run the event fully from the watch leaving the phone at home. The watch is an FR55 with MaprunG v1.7.1 installed.

tag:maprun.308.s1.nabble.com,2006:post-1812New PurplePen and Import App2024-01-13T11:48:46Z2024-01-27T18:10:31ZMichaelRaz
If you use PurplePen:
With the latest Purple Pen 3.5.0 Course setting application (PP) PPEN , along with bug fixes and better display, there is a new function, allowing you to Move, Scale and Rotate all the controls.

This seemed like a good time to (partially) sort out the ability to import a set of controls from a KML, IOFXML or GPX file into PPEN to avoid manually re-entering a bunch of controls - hence my new app (link below). This is the beta so there are some limitations!

Basically this will pull out the controls from the control file selected and using either Map X,Y coordinates already available in the file (such as most IOFXML course files or, as in the case of a KML or GPX, convert the LonLat locations to a global X,Y (doing all the standard geo-trig stuff), set the first control to map coord 0,0 and adjust the rest (along with scaling). This data is then be put into a 'blank' PPEN file and uploaded that will open in the PPEN application with the controls laid out on the blank map screen somewhat reasonably scaled for a normal orienteering map. Then you add the Event Map File to PPEN (kinda a reverse order of things) such as an image, OCAD etc and use the PPEN Move/Scale/Rotate function to adjust the control locations. Generally you will need to do all 3 so two known control locations are needed. In my testing I just select the Move/Scale/Rotate option. Obviously there will not be any control descriptions so you still have a lot of work to do!

There is also an option to upload a current PPEN file as a template (that will likely contain controls already, an image map or reference to an OCA/OOM map, and any special items added to the map such as images, text etc). With this, the controls and courses in the template PPEN file are stripped out, as are special items linked only to a specific course. Then the new controls are added as above and you carry on as before. Note that the original PPEN file IS NOT overwritten so no worry there - a new one is produced to download.

Slightly more detailed explanation is found on the main page of the app.

I’ve tested KML, IOFXML and GPX files from many sources and so far no issues, although I am focussed on ones that are provided from some orienteering application – I cannot handle really weird stuff unless I run into it.

Feedback welcome. I still need to fix and improve a few things. Next (harder) step is to allow importing controls and previous courses (such as in an IOFXML Course file.
IOFXML V3 to KML Files
QR Codes (generator)

I organize a few events that uses a very different scoring system that normal score events. We have 4 or 5 categories that increase in multiples of 25 points.
Beginner - 25 pts
Intermediate - 50
Advanced - 75
Expert - 100
Backcountry - 125 pts (or in multi-sport 200 points)

I don't have more than 9 controls in each category so if there is a way to assign all controls with codes starting with a 3 (ie 31, 32, 33) 25 points and then those with 4 being 50 points, etc. etc. that would be great.

I could change our scoring system to match an existing MapRun format but we have point totals (ie max 2,500 in a 6 hour race) that individuals and teams compare to year over year. So ideally I'd like to keep our existing system.

Our races: ChallengeTheShield.ca

Thanks so much,

All the courses I have created have been at my laptop. I'll then create a Checksite course and test how accurately the controls created on the kml file relate to 'real life'.

It got me wondering if it was possible to do this in reverse, i.e. walk round the proposed course and at the appropriate location press a button to create the control. While it may take longer to create the course it would simplify the checking of the control location.

Is this possible?

I admit this is a bit of an odd one, but I am trying to make this work. "This" is Scrabble. I set this up as a scatter (since everyone goes in different directions depending on the word they are trying to spell) and all works except that when you try to use a code more than once, it has that code you used a 2nd or 3rd time as an extra control and puts it on the bottom. I need to convert the codes to letters but when I do that they will be in order with the exception of the "extra control"

Hi Peter

I had an issue editing the results from our Grewelthorpe event in July but assumed it was just me, today I went to finish the editing after successfully completing the editing on our Malham event and the problem persisted in that when I delete a result it stays on the list but goes from the main results display that users see on the event but I also couldn't re-edit a results that had been edited as it said it didn't exist

This problem also appeared on todays Cropton event when I went to adjust the penalties for those over 5 minutes late ( BMBO has a sliding scale of penalties and we have found leaving at 1 point per minute catches most riders and we only have to adjust those later than 5 minutes)

tag:maprun.308.s1.nabble.com,2006:post-1697Potential Feature Request - New Field: Bib2023-06-21T10:50:43Z2023-06-21T10:50:43ZMichaelRaz
I'm hoping to get some user feedback on how useful this might be or additional use cases that might impact how to implement it before "formally" putting it in as a feature request. First some short background:

I support an adventure race that uses a combined punch card and MapRun. I have an excel application that, in simple terms, when teams come in and upload MapRun Results, it sucks these results in, cross references the MapRun Name found with the one that the team registered with, and adds the results to the spreadsheet. A quick comparison to these results and the punch cards at the results desk either confirms the results or requires a quick modification within OUR results (such as adding a punch that MapRun missed but is on the card). Our system then updates the score based on this modification and it is "locked". The one problem we have every year is people register the wrong MapRun name (misspelled, extra spaces, etc). The cross referencing algorithm (fancy name) tries to get around these but then there are the people who completely switch phones or decide to upload the other team member's results. All this gets sorted out but it does slow things down when a mass of finishers arrive. SO ...

I'm wondering if it would work better to add a field in either the MapRun user profile or directly whent opening the event on the app to use a unique identifier - a Bib Number? At check-in teams show their MapRun app to validate the user name but, as mentioned, this often messes up. The registration desk would have a much easier time just making sure this additional field matches the team's Bib. I want to stress that this is in addition to the User Name, and just another field like phone number.

In a perfect setup this Bib number should be linked to the event but I'm sure this is much more complicated (when is it added by the user, what if the event is locked etc). I could see, in our use case, how the check-in could be used to make sure the event is loaded and the Bib is correct at the same time (although this conflicts a bit in that we also have a small test course that we encourage teams to use after check-in to make sure the phone is working properly).

Adding this into the User Profile as an additional field is not as 'neat' as being tied to the specific event but likely much easier to implement with changes to the profile section and include it in results exports. It does mean it, if not removed, will show up in other results but this is not really serious IMO.

So curious if anyone else seems a benefit to this additional field and has any suggestions on how it could be used best.

He is running with the latest version of MapRun G and MapRun7 I believe.

I wasn't there to witness him starting but believe his course started ok on the watch. I am not sure if controls beeped on his watch when he run. The app doesn't record any time or controls visited and on the results shows 'Save' in the controls list.

I set up my first ScoreP event today. I thought I understood all the parameters but it seems to score the Start and Finish as controls.
In the picture, I have copied the parameters for ScoreV into the test page and you can see that it counts S1 and F1. It did this in real life too, so at least the test page is accurate!
Does anyone know what parameter needs to be changed to stop S1 and F1 from being counted as controls in the score?

MDOC just held an event which had half the controls on an orienteering map and the other half on an OS map. This worked fine, except for the punch tolerance to be acceptable for the OS map, the orienteering controls were trivially easy.

It would be great if controls could be set to have individual tolerances, or grouped such that controls 1-20 have tolerance A, controls 21-40 have tolerance B, etc.

That would also allow greater tolerance to be set in known dodgy GPS signal areas but keep it at a lower level when signal is good.

The on-line version may suit 90% of users and is simple to use (instructions on the site). Besides the standard QR configuration options, you can add a logo, and use or not use a label area or frame. From a Maprun perspective the main value is it is set to focus on this application and makes selecting a range of controls easy (for example 'S1,31,36-46,F1') and will provide a zip file with all the resulting codes. Currently (and likely for a long time) it will output only PNG files.

Along with this new utility, the site contains:

Convert GPX Waypoints to KML - useful when using a Checksite to look over an area and want to mark waypoints along the route.

Clean Up/Renumber KML FIles - generally tigy up a KML for MapRun (especially one that came from the utility above.

IOFXMLV3 to KML - title says it all. nothing unique and available on other sites.

New to Maprun and needed for orienteering events I want to do. Tried- and failed last Sunday.
And I tried again on a permanent event today with zero success. So, 2 related questions:
1. How do you use Maprun G if the event is started with a PIN code? I press 'start' on Garmin and it does not start the event, neither does simply leaving the start. PIN is required for the event in Maprun 7.1.6 (and does start on entry of PIN- and all seems good as long as Maprun is operating in the foreground...)
2. How do you get an IPhone to run Maprun is background including playing sound? I have zero problems with any other software- e.g. Google maps runs in background. With Maprun I seem to need to set it to access location services 'all the time' (not just 'when using app') but I still can't get a beep out of it (works fine in foreground so unaware of problem until I actually started the event).
Maprun then simply stopped working during the event (location services set to 'when using app' - my default setting for any app for hopefully obvious reasons)- possibly because it didn't get a GPS fix for a while???
Thanks

Hi,

I have downloaded Maprun 7 and I have no idea why I can't hear it. It worked fine on Maprun 6.

Settings on my phone are all as should be.

I have also deleted and re downloaded but to no avail. On test i buzzes my Garmin, in actual event, nothing. So I think it must be a Maprun setting that is awry.

Help!!
