Tim,
There is a new issue with the display of background maps in the MapRun App (on Android and iPhone mobiles).
For most events, MapRun Admins include an Orienteering Map in KMZ format in the setup of their events. This overlays the underlying base map, and most users don’t see the base map.
However, the base map can be seen when the user scrolls off the edge of the Orienteering Map, or if they change the transparency of the Orienteering map, or if there is no Orienteering Map setup for that event.
The default underlying base map is Open Street Map, although there is the option for Admins (or for users) to change to Google Satellite Imagery.
The issue is that MapRun’s use of free Open Street Map tiles now exceeds the service provider’s free-use threshold (for the first time since MapRun commenced), and tiles are either being shown as blank or shown with a warning message.
We need to change our map-service-provider arrangements, which will need to be done in a new version of the MapRun app.
In the meantime:
- note that this does NOT affect the display of maps in the Console, Results or Live Tracking websites (only the Android and iPhone App)
- it does not affect the functioning of the App otherwise
- you can work around this by, when setting up an event, by selecting the background map type to “Satellite” in Settings
- users can work around this, which may be desirable for existing published events, by changing the relevant setting in “Options and Settings” (by default this setting is not locked).
Please let me know if you have any questions/issues.
